
Band Development
Program Structure
Our program is divided into three progressive levels, ensuring accessibility for different ages and skill levels.
Level 1: Busy Bees (Ages 5+)

Objective: Introduce rhythm, pitch, and music fundamentals through interactive play.

Singing simple, engaging songs to develop pitch recognition.

Percussion fun: shakers, tambourines, triangles, and small drums.

Learning steady beats through call-and-response games.

Introduction to brass instruments using plastic mouthpieces.

Session Length: 20-30-minute interactive sessions.

Delivery: Weekly sessions per term.
Level 2: Brass Explorers

Objective: Introduce brass instruments in an accessible way, using plastic instruments, and small percussion.

Activities:

Hands-on instrument exploration (cornet, trombone, baritone).
-
Simple notation and rhythm reading through interactive games.
-
Rotating between instruments to find a good fit for each student.

Playing basic melodies and fun ensemble warm-ups.

Session Length: 30-45-minute sessions.

Delivery: Weekly sessions, with instrument loan options for students showing keen interest.
Level 3: Beeginner Band

Objective: Develop ensemble playing skills and progress toward performance opportunities.

Activities:

Playing together as a small band using entry-level brass instruments.

Introduction to dynamics, articulation, and phrasing.

Performing short, simple pieces.
-
Preparing for school and community performances.

Session Length: 1-hour weekly sessions.
-
Delivery: Weekly sessions per term.
Level 4 - Buzzing Brass Wellington Band
Target Group: More advanced players with a solid musical foundation, ready for contesting. Goals:

Advanced Repertoire:

Work on pieces up to 10 minutes in length, with increased technical demands.

Develop a deeper understanding of phrasing, expression, and complex rhythms.

Rehearsal Discipline:

2-hour weekly rehearsals with a focus on refining ensemble sound, intonation, and precision.

Emphasis on sectionals to address instrument-specific challenges.

Concert and Contest Preparation:

Prepare for 45-minute to 1-hour concerts, performing four times per year.
-
Compete in D Grade Band Nationals and district competitions, honing performance skills under pressure.

Ensemble Techniques:

Learn advanced ensemble techniques like dynamic contrast, tempo changes, and balance.
-
Focus on tuning, listening across the band, and interpreting musical scores effectively. Additional Opportunities:

Section Leaders: Appoint experienced players to mentor less experienced members.
Community Engagement: Participate in community events and represent the band in public performances.





Instrument Hire
Instrument hire plans are available through Wellington Brass Band and can be paid for through Buzzing Brass. Instruments available are (subject to supply): Soprano cornet, Cornet, Flugelhorn, Tenor horn, Baritone horn, Euphonium, Trombone, and Tuba. Trumpet and French horn are not available through Wellington Brass.
Instrument Hire plans are also available through ABI Music (including Trumpet and French horn)
